ErieHerkimer County has 40 golf courses in and around it. The West Canada Creek (actually a river) runs north-south through it and affords canoeing and world class fishing. Running through it in an east-west direction is the Erie Canal for boating, fishing, and historic tours. There are three Canal Locks here. You'll find the cross-state Erie Canal Bicycle Trail paralleling the river. There are Revolutionary and Civil War re-enactments scheduled during the summer. Hunting and winter sports abound and the northern half of the county is within the Adirondack State Park, largest park in the 48 States. It has many hunting, fishing, boating, hiking and backpacking opportunities. There are a number of private campgrounds in the county. The roads of Herkimer County allow bicyclists to see it closer and in greater depth. Herkimer County boasts 7 or 8 golf courses. There are 2 small Amish communities.
